Understanding Neuro Muscular Conditions

Neuro-muscular conditions such as multiple sclerosis, motor-neurone disease and muscular dystrophy are characterised by loss of muscle strength, as progressive muscle wasting or nerve deterioration occurs. Symptoms may be minor through to life threatening and can include changes within the muscles, such as wastage, weakness, pain, cramping, spasticity or paralysis, loss of coordination and balance, skin rashes, altered sensation such as tingling, numbness and pins and needles, difficulty with breathing and swallowing, altered vision, fatigue, tremors and twitching, altered speech, changes in bowel and bladder function, and mood changes.

The conditions can affect girls, boys, men and women of all ages, and occur across all ethnic groups and often more than once in one family.
